What surprised me about Manhattan on our 2017 trip was that it did not have the expected feeling of a jammed high rise city.
I don't know if it was the fact that the city was finite, defined by its island surrounded by water, or if was the fact that each neighborhood had a distinct feeling of its own.
Either way, I did not get that feeling of claustrophobia that I expected... and I was pleasantly surprised.
